COURSE CURRICULUM

The Computer Information Systems (CIS) major at Southeast Missouri State University is a 78-hour program designed to prepare students for careers in software development, systems design, cybersecurity, data analytics, and information technology management. The curriculum combines computer science foundations with applied information systems training to ensure students develop both technical expertise and practical problem-solving skills needed in modern technology-driven industries. Students begin with core programming and computer science courses such as introduction to programming, computer science sequences, and software engineering, which build a strong foundation in coding, algorithms, and system design. Additional core areas include databases, data analytics, cybersecurity, web development, mobile application development, human-computer interaction, and IT project management, providing a broad understanding of how information systems are built, secured, and managed. The program also includes coursework in ethics in the cyber world and probability and statistics to support responsible decision-making and data interpretation. A capstone experience allows students to integrate their knowledge through a comprehensive project that reflects real-world industry challenges. Students then choose one of three specialized tracks to tailor their degree to specific career goals. The Artificial Intelligence and Gaming track focuses on machine learning, game development, cloud computing, and advanced AI concepts, preparing students for emerging roles in intelligent systems and interactive media. The Cybersecurity track emphasizes network security, access control, ethical hacking concepts, and cyber operations, preparing students for roles in information security and defense. The Healthcare and Business Administration track blends computing with business and healthcare knowledge, including courses in management, healthcare systems, economics, and information systems strategy, preparing students for technology roles in healthcare and business environments. Across all tracks, students gain hands-on experience through labs, internships, and project-based learning. Overall, the CIS program prepares graduates for a wide range of technology careers by combining strong technical training with real-world application, teamwork, and industry-relevant specialization options.
