COURSE CURRICULUM

The Communication Disorders major at Southeast Missouri State University provides a comprehensive, clinically focused education designed to prepare students for advanced study and professional practice in speech-language pathology and audiology. The curriculum integrates foundational science, communication theory, and hands-on clinical experience to help students understand how speech, language, hearing, and neurophysiological systems function and how they may be affected by disorders across the lifespan. Core coursework begins with anatomy and physiology of the speech mechanism, phonetics, normal speech and language development, and speech and hearing science, building a strong scientific base for understanding human communication. Students then progress into more specialized areas such as audiological assessment, neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, neurogenic disorders, and the assessment and treatment of articulation, voice, fluency, and language-based literacy disorders. Clinical application is emphasized through practicum experiences and service delivery courses, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in supervised settings while developing professional skills in assessment, intervention, and client interaction. Additional training in counseling individuals with communication disorders, culturally responsive practice, and communication technology ensures students are prepared to work effectively with diverse populations and modern clinical tools. Supporting coursework in medical terminology, psychology, sociology or deaf culture, statistics, and human biology further strengthens interdisciplinary understanding and prepares students for evidence-based practice. A senior seminar course integrates learning across the program and supports transition into graduate education or professional pathways. Students also select an elective in areas such as communication technology or aural rehabilitation to deepen their specialization. Overall, this major is structured to meet the academic and clinical prerequisites required for graduate programs in speech-language pathology or audiology, while providing early exposure to real-world clinical environments.
