COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biochemistry program at Southeast Missouri State University offers a rigorous and comprehensive curriculum that integrates chemistry, biology, and laboratory science to prepare students for careers in research, healthcare, biotechnology, and forensic science, as well as for graduate or professional study.The program begins with a strong chemistry foundation, including General Chemistry I and II with labs, Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry with laboratory components. Students also complete multiple Chemistry Seminar courses, which help develop scientific communication and professional skills. Advanced coursework such as Polymer Chemistry, Foundations of Biochemistry, and Chemical Instrumentation ensures students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory expertise.The Biochemistry Option builds on this foundation with biology-focused courses such as Cell and Organismal Biology, Genetics, and General Microbiology. Students also gain hands-on experience through Laboratory Methods in Biotechnology and advanced organic chemistry courses. Specialized courses like Forensic Chemistry and Advanced Biochemistry allow students to explore specific interests within the field.Students further tailor their education through electives and focused course selections. Options include Cell Biology or Forensic DNA Analysis, as well as courses in molecular biology or biochemistry laboratories. A statistics course is also required, strengthening data analysis skills essential for scientific research.In addition to core and specialized coursework, the program includes supporting requirements in mathematics, computer programming, and physics. Students complete Applied Calculus or Calculus I, an introductory programming course, and a full sequence of physics courses.
