COURSE CURRICULUM

The Vocal Performance Music Education program requires students to complete a comprehensive combination of professional education and music-focused coursework to prepare for K–12 teaching certification in general and vocal music. A total of 40 credit hours in professional education courses is required, with a minimum grade of C in each course. These courses provide a strong foundation in teaching methods, adolescent development, and instructional strategies, including specialized training in music education. Students study the psychology and education of exceptional learners, principles of teaching music, and content literacy methods, along with multiple pedagogy courses focused on effective teaching in middle and secondary schools. The program also includes structured field experiences and a full student teaching component, allowing students to gain extensive hands-on experience in real classroom settings and develop practical teaching skills.In addition to education courses, students must complete 61 credit hours of required music courses that build strong knowledge in music theory, history, vocal performance, and teaching techniques. The curriculum includes foundational courses such as music fundamentals, harmony, composition, and music history, along with progressive aural skills training to enhance listening and musical interpretation abilities. Students focus on vocal-specific areas including choral techniques, choral literature, vocal pedagogy, and singer’s diction, which are essential for teaching and performing vocal music. Performance remains a central element of the program, with students participating in applied music courses, choral ensembles, recitals, and concert attendance across multiple semesters. Piano proficiency is also required and supported through a sequence of functional piano courses. Additional components such as the senior recital, sophomore review, and proficiency assessments help track academic and performance progress. This combination of theoretical knowledge, vocal specialization, and extensive field experience ensures that graduates are well-prepared to become effective and confident vocal music educators.
