COURSE CURRICULUM

The Vocal Performance major requires the completion of 75 to 79 credit hours and provides an intensive curriculum focused on developing advanced vocal technique, musical understanding, and professional performance skills, with a minimum grade of C required in all courses. Students build a strong academic foundation through courses in music history, including studies of music before and after 1800, along with music fundamentals, harmony, composition, and musical analysis. Aural skills are developed progressively across multiple levels to strengthen listening, sight-singing, and overall musicianship. Applied voice study is a central component of the program, with students receiving continuous training to refine vocal technique, expression, and stage presence. Performance experience is emphasized through participation in vocal ensembles across multiple semesters, as well as recitals and concert attendance, helping students gain confidence and professional readiness. Additional coursework in singer’s diction, vocal pedagogy, and vocal literature further enhances their ability to perform and understand vocal music. Piano proficiency is also required and supported through a sequence of functional piano courses, while conducting and music business courses prepare students for broader career opportunities.The program also offers flexibility through elective coursework, where students complete 15 credit hours from a variety of specialized areas, including music history, jazz studies, songwriting, music technology, and audio production, with specific requirements to include both music history and music theory courses. Students may also choose between chamber music or opera theatre workshop to further develop performance skills. Key milestones such as the junior and senior recitals, sophomore review, and major field assessment test are used to evaluate student progress and readiness for professional performance. Additionally, students are required to complete six credit hours in either French or German, supporting their ability to perform and interpret vocal repertoire in original languages. Overall, the curriculum combines rigorous academic study, specialized vocal training, and extensive performance experience, preparing graduates for careers as professional vocalists or for advanced study in music.
