COURSE CURRICULUM

The Instrumental Music Performance major requires the completion of 79 to 83 credit hours and provides an intensive curriculum focused on developing advanced performance skills, musical understanding, and professional preparation, with a minimum grade of C required in all courses. Students build a strong academic foundation through courses in music history, including studies of music before and after 1800, as well as music fundamentals, harmony, composition, and musical analysis. Aural skills are developed progressively across multiple levels to enhance listening, sight-singing, and overall musicianship. A central component of the program is applied instrumental study, where students receive focused training on their chosen instrument across several levels, helping them refine technique, expression, and performance ability. Performance experience is emphasized through participation in major ensembles over multiple semesters, chamber music, recitals, and regular concert attendance, allowing students to build confidence and stage presence. Piano proficiency is also required and supported through a sequence of functional piano courses, while additional elements such as conducting, music business, and career development prepare students for the professional world.The program also offers flexibility through elective coursework, where students complete 15 credit hours from a range of specialized areas, including music history topics, jazz studies, songwriting, music technology, pedagogy, and audio production. These electives allow students to tailor their studies based on their interests and career goals, whether in performance, composition, or related fields. Key milestones such as the junior and senior recitals, sophomore review, and major field assessment test help evaluate student progress and readiness for professional work. Additionally, students are required to complete six credit hours in a foreign language, supporting broader cultural understanding and communication skills. Overall, the curriculum combines rigorous academic study, extensive performance training, and professional development, preparing graduates for careers as performers or for advanced study in music.
