COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design Technology at Southeast Missouri State University is an 82-hour major with no minor required and a minimum 3.0 GPA requirement in the major. The program provides intensive, hands-on training in all areas of theatrical production and design, preparing students for professional careers in theatre, film, and live entertainment industries.The curriculum begins with foundational courses in rehearsal and production, theatre design and technology, script analysis, stagecraft, drawing for theatre, stage management, and construction techniques. Students also study costume construction, scenic design, lighting, sound design, properties, and theatrical history, building a strong technical and artistic foundation. Courses in period and style further develop students’ understanding of design across historical and cultural contexts.Students gain practical production experience through participation in rehearsals, productions, and a required BFA project that serves as a capstone experience. They may also complete an internship or summer workshop to gain additional professional exposure. A Shakespeare requirement strengthens their understanding of classical theatre literature and performance context.Advanced coursework allows students to specialize in areas such as makeup, audio production, production engineering, costume crafts, scenic painting, lighting, sound design, projection design, and advanced scenic or costume design. This flexibility helps students tailor their education toward specific technical or design careers.Overall, the program emphasizes experiential learning, technical mastery, and creative collaboration, preparing graduates for leadership roles in theatre production and design across professional entertainment industries.
