COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Social Science curriculum at Southeast Missouri State University is designed to provide a strong interdisciplinary foundation while allowing students to specialize in a primary area of interest. The program begins with core courses such as Survey of Social Science, Problems in Social Science, and Social Science Research Methods, which introduce students to key concepts, critical thinking, and research skills across multiple disciplines. A statistics requirement further strengthens analytical abilities, with options including statistical reasoning, probability and statistics, behavioral statistics, business statistics, or statistics for social scientists.Students then complete 21 credit hours in a chosen concentration area—such as anthropology, criminal justice, economics, history, political science, psychology, or sociology—with at least 15 hours at the advanced 300–500 level to ensure depth of knowledge and expertise. To complement this, students take 6 additional hours of coursework from a secondary area outside their main concentration, promoting a broader interdisciplinary perspective.This flexible structure allows students to combine disciplines and tailor their education to match their interests and career goals. By integrating core social science knowledge, research skills, statistical analysis, and both focused and broad coursework, the program prepares graduates to analyze complex social issues and pursue careers in fields such as government, research, business, social services, and beyond.
