COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Political Science curriculum at Southeast Missouri State University is designed to provide both a strong academic foundation and flexibility for students to explore diverse areas within the field. The program begins with core courses such as Introduction to Political Science and a Senior Seminar, along with a required senior assessment to evaluate overall learning. Students must also choose at least one introductory course focusing on either U.S. Political Systems or Comparative Political Systems to build foundational knowledge of governance structures. A key component of the curriculum is the requirement to complete 15 credit hours across the five major political science subfields—American Government and Politics, Comparative Governments and Politics, International Politics, Political Theory, and Public Administration—ensuring a well-rounded understanding of political systems and ideas. In addition, students complete 6 hours of political science electives, with at least 9 total hours taken at the advanced (300-level or above) level to deepen analytical and critical thinking skills.An important distinguishing feature of the program is the requirement of 12 credit hours in a single foreign language, which strengthens students’ ability to communicate across cultures and enhances their global perspective—an essential skill in political science careers. Overall, this structured yet flexible curriculum equips students with comprehensive knowledge of political systems, strong research and communication abilities, and the global awareness needed for careers in government, international relations, public service, and beyond.
