COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in English at SEMO is a 42-hour major designed to provide students with a strong foundation in literary studies, writing, language, and critical analysis without requiring a minor. The program begins with core coursework such as Writing About Literature, which develops essential skills in literary interpretation and academic writing. Students then study a range of early and survey literature courses, including world, English, and American literature, which build a broad understanding of major literary traditions and historical developments. A significant portion of the program focuses on special topics in literature, allowing students to explore areas such as Shakespeare, Victorian studies, film and television studies, postcolonial literature, Southern literature, African-American literature, and contemporary literary movements. This flexibility enables students to tailor their studies toward specific interests while gaining exposure to diverse cultural and historical perspectives. The curriculum also emphasizes broadened perspectives through courses that examine themes such as gender, race, immigration, multicultural literature, and global identities, helping students develop a deeper understanding of social and cultural issues through literary texts.
