COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in English Education at SEMO is designed to prepare future teachers for successful careers in middle and high school classrooms by combining strong subject-area knowledge with extensive professional training. The program includes 36 hours of English coursework and 44 hours of professional education courses, ensuring students develop both deep content expertise and effective teaching skills. The English curriculum provides a strong foundation in writing, literature, language, and textual analysis through core courses such as Writing About Literature, Grammar of English, Composition in the Secondary School, and Teaching Literature and Non-Fiction Texts in Secondary Schools. Students also study young adult literature, world literature, British and American literature, and have opportunities to explore specialized topics in language, linguistics, and literary studies. Elective options allow further focus in areas such as sociolinguistics, history of the English language, Shakespeare, Victorian literature, creative writing, and advanced composition, giving students flexibility to tailor their academic experience.The professional education component is a key strength of the program and includes coursework in instructional methods, pedagogy, literacy instruction, classroom management, adolescent psychology, and educational technology. Students gain hands-on experience through multiple field placements in real school settings, beginning with early observations and progressing to advanced teaching practice. These experiences culminate in a full student teaching semester, where candidates assume classroom responsibilities under supervision for an extended period. This structure ensures that graduates are fully prepared for the realities of teaching in diverse educational environments.
