COURSE CURRICULUM

The 52-hour Dance major at SEMO is a highly structured and performance-focused program designed to develop versatile, technically skilled, and creatively expressive dancers while preparing them for careers in performance, choreography, production, and related arts fields. The curriculum builds a strong foundation through core courses in movement analysis, improvisation, choreography, global dance traditions, Western dance history, and career preparation, helping students understand both the artistic and professional dimensions of the dance industry. Students also gain essential behind-the-scenes knowledge through theatre-based courses in rehearsal, production, and technical theatre, which support their understanding of stage performance and production processes. A major strength of the program is its emphasis on technical versatility, requiring students to complete extensive training across multiple dance styles, including ballet, contemporary, jazz, hip hop, commercial, and tap. This multi-genre approach ensures that students develop adaptability and a broad skill set that aligns with the demands of professional dance and entertainment industries. In addition to performance training, students take supporting coursework in areas such as anatomy and physiology, conditioning for dance, dance musicianship, and teaching methods, which contribute to a deeper understanding of the body, movement efficiency, and pedagogy.
