ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) is a public university located in Cape Girardeau, with additional regional campuses and a secondary River Campus that houses the Holland College of Arts and Media. Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, the university enrolls around 9,677 students and offers more than 175 undergraduate and 75 graduate programs. Originally founded in 1873 as a normal school for teacher training, it still maintains a strong emphasis on education while expanding into fields such as business, healthcare, technology, and the arts. The university is organized into five academic units, including the Holland College of Arts and Media and the Harrison College of Business and Computing. Its athletic teams, known as the Redhawks, compete in NCAA Division I within the Ohio Valley Conference, with football participating in the Football Championship Subdivision. The university has undergone several transformations since its founding, beginning as Southeast Missouri State Normal School and eventually adopting its current name in 1973. Early classes were held at a local school before the first campus building opened in 1875. A notable early structure, the Normal Building, was famously described by Mark Twain in Life on the Mississippi, but it was destroyed by fire in 1902. It was replaced by the iconic Academic Hall in 1906, which remains a central campus landmark designed by Jerome Bibb Legg. Over time, the institution expanded significantly in both enrollment and infrastructure, growing from about 1,600 students in the 1950s to over 7,000 in the 1970s while broadening its academic offerings beyond teacher education.A major milestone in its modern development was the establishment of the River Campus in 2007, following the acquisition of a former seminary site along the Mississippi River. This expansion strengthened the university’s focus on visual and performing arts and enhanced its statewide reputation. The university also historically operated “University Schools,” which provided hands-on teaching experience for education students until their closure in 1987 due to rising costs. Overall, SEMO has evolved into a comprehensive public university known for its diverse academic programs, strong educational heritage, and commitment to experiential learning.
