COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Social Work (MSW) program requires between 37 and 60 units, depending on whether students enter through the regular program or the advanced standing option. In the regular program, students complete a 32-unit foundation core curriculum that includes coursework in social policy, human behavior, transcultural generalist practice, research methods, and practicum experiences, along with a graduate writing course that fulfills the GWAR requirement. This core can be completed in one year for the 2-year track or spread over two years in the 3-year track. Students with advanced standing complete a 9-unit summer bridge instead of the full foundation curriculum.In the advanced year, all students complete 12 units focused on specialized, transcultural multi-systems practice, including one course each in advanced practice and policy, along with additional electives tailored to their area of interest such as health and aging, child welfare, mental health, or education. Students also complete 6 units of advanced general electives chosen with advisor guidance. A significant component of the program is the 10-unit practicum, where students gain hands-on field experience through supervised placements. The program concludes with a 6-unit culminating experience (Plan B), consisting of a two-part project (Special Study A and B) along with a comprehensive examination. Overall, the program integrates theory, policy, and extensive fieldwork to prepare graduates for advanced professional practice and leadership roles in social work.
