COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Transportation Management (MSTM) at San José State University is a 30-unit graduate program designed to prepare professionals for leadership roles in the transportation and infrastructure sectors. The program, offered through the Lucas Graduate School of Business in partnership with the Mineta Transportation Institute, focuses on developing advanced knowledge of transportation systems, policy, finance, planning, and organizational management. It is structured to be completed on a part-time basis, typically over two and a half to three years, making it suitable for working professionals. The curriculum includes 18 units of required core courses covering key areas such as transportation systems and society, transportation funding and finance, policy and regulation, marketing and communications, planning and project development, and leadership and management of transportation organizations. These foundational courses provide a comprehensive understanding of how transportation systems function and how they are managed within public and private sectors. Students then complete 6 units of electives, selecting from specialized topics such as transportation security and emergency management, safety and compliance, sustainable and resilient transportation systems, project management, technology innovation, and high-speed rail planning and operations. The program culminates in a 6-unit capstone experience, where students complete a two-course sequence focused on project design and evaluation, allowing them to apply their learning to real-world transportation challenges. The curriculum is designed to integrate academic theory with practical application, ensuring that graduates are prepared to address complex transportation issues in areas such as policy development, infrastructure planning, system operations, and organizational leadership.
