COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Science Education requires a total of 30 units and is designed to provide advanced knowledge in science teaching, research, and educational practices. The program includes 9 units of core courses, covering secondary school science, research methods, and theories and practices in science education, with the latter fulfilling the GWAR requirement. Students then complete 15 units of electives, which may include courses such as science education data analysis, advanced natural science topics, and seminars, along with other approved 100- or 200-level courses selected in consultation with an advisor. Additional approved courses from the College of Education, such as educational sociology, educational psychology, classroom issues for language learners, and assessment and evaluation, allow students to broaden their expertise. The program also allows transfer of up to 9 units from credential coursework, depending on prior qualifications. The final 6 units consist of a culminating experience, where students choose between a thesis (Plan A) or a project (Plan B), both involving research courses and an oral defense. Overall, the program integrates theory, research, and practice to prepare graduates for advanced roles in science education, curriculum development, and further doctoral study.
