COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Quantum Technology requires a total of 30 units and provides an interdisciplinary foundation in quantum science, combining physics and engineering concepts. The program begins with 12 units of core coursework, including Fundamentals of Quantum Information and a GWAR course, which can be fulfilled through Research and Communication in Physics, Graduate Optics Lab, or Technical Writing and Engineering Ethics. Students then complete 6 units of core technical courses by selecting two advanced subjects such as Quantum Programming, Quantum Many-Body Physics, or Quantum Computing Architectures, building specialized expertise in quantum systems and technologies.In addition, students complete 12 units of electives, including at least two 200-level courses in physics or electrical engineering, with options spanning quantum computing, nanoelectronics, stochastic processes, quantum mechanics, electro-optics, computational physics, laser spectroscopy, and solid-state physics. Approved coursework from related STEM fields such as mathematics or computer science may also count toward the degree, allowing flexibility and interdisciplinary depth.The program concludes with a 6-unit culminating experience, where students choose between a thesis (Plan A) or a project (Plan B), depending on their academic and career goals. This involves directed research and either a master’s thesis or a research report/project, supervised by faculty from either the Physics and Astronomy or Electrical Engineering departments. Overall, the program integrates theoretical knowledge, technical skills, and research experience to prepare graduates for careers in quantum computing, advanced technology industries, or further doctoral study.
