COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Physics requires a total of 30 units and is designed to provide advanced theoretical knowledge, research skills, and flexibility for specialization in various areas of physics. Students must first complete the 3-unit Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) through either Research and Communication in Physics or Graduate Optics Lab, which develops scientific writing and communication skills. The core component consists of 9 units, where students select three advanced courses from topics such as Advanced Dynamics, Electromagnetic Theory, Methods in Mathematical Physics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Theory, forming a strong foundation in key areas of physics. The program also includes 12 units of electives, combining 200-level physics courses with approved coursework in physics, mathematics, science, or engineering, allowing students to tailor their studies to specific interests such as computational physics, astrophysics, or applied physics. The culminating experience accounts for 6 units and can be completed through either a thesis (Plan A) or a project (Plan B). Plan A involves directed research and completion of a master’s thesis, while Plan B includes directed research, additional electives, and a graduate research report. Overall, the program integrates rigorous coursework with research experience to prepare students for careers in scientific research, technology, industry, or further doctoral study in physics and related fields.
