COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s program in Mathematics requires a total of 33 units and is designed to provide advanced training in both pure and applied mathematics. The curriculum is structured to develop strong theoretical foundations, analytical skills, and research capability through core courses, electives, and a culminating experience.The core component consists of 21 units. Students begin with Communication in the Mathematical Sciences, which focuses on advanced mathematical writing and fulfills the GWAR requirement. They then complete foundational graduate-level courses in Higher Algebra I and II, Real Analysis, and Functional Analysis. These courses build deep theoretical understanding in key areas of modern mathematics. In addition, students select two courses from a set of advanced topics that may include Advanced Matrix Theory, Advanced Complex Variables, Topology, or Graph Theory. This allows students to begin specializing in areas aligned with their academic and research interests.The program also includes an elective component totaling 6 units. Students choose two courses from a wide range of advanced mathematics offerings such as Number Theory, Dynamical Systems, Numerical Methods, Regression Theory, Stochastic Processes, or additional courses in topology, graph theory, and applied mathematics. An additional 3 units of electives are selected in consultation with a graduate advisor from either 100- or 200-level courses, with some restrictions on specific preparatory courses. This flexible structure allows students to tailor their studies toward pure mathematics, applied mathematics, or computational directions.The culminating experience accounts for 3 units and may be completed through one of three pathways: a thesis (Plan A), a writing project (Plan B), or a comprehensive exam option. Both thesis and project routes require formal oral presentation and defense, ensuring students demonstrate mastery of their chosen topic. The comprehensive exam option substitutes an additional elective course and final examination in place of a written thesis or project.Overall, the program provides rigorous training designed to prepare students for doctoral studies, academic careers, or professional roles requiring advanced mathematical expertise.
