COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s program in Justice Studies at San José State University is a 33-unit graduate degree designed to provide advanced interdisciplinary training in criminology, criminal justice, law, and social theory. The program combines theoretical foundations, research methodology, and applied analysis to help students critically examine issues related to crime, justice systems, social inequality, and public policy. Through this curriculum, students develop strong analytical, research, and writing skills that prepare them for both professional practice and academic advancement.The core curriculum consists of 18 units and forms the foundation of the program. Students take JS 201 (Justice and Social Theory, GWAR), which focuses on theoretical frameworks for understanding justice and society. They also complete JS 202 (Survey of Research Methods), JS 203 (Applied Statistics in Justice Studies), JS 207 (Qualitative Research Methods), JS 211 (Historical Issues in Justice Studies), and JS 220 (Criminological Theory). Together, these courses provide comprehensive training in both quantitative and qualitative research methods, as well as a strong grounding in historical and theoretical perspectives on justice.Students then complete 9 units of electives selected from a range of specialized seminars that explore topics such as law and courts, juvenile justice, policing, punishment, human rights, immigration, social movements, deviance, and comparative criminology. This flexibility allows students to tailor their studies according to their academic interests and career goals. Additional options such as practicum and special study courses provide opportunities for applied learning and professional engagement.The program culminates in a 6-unit experience through either Plan A (Thesis) or Plan B (Project). The thesis option (JS 299) involves independent research, while the project option (JS 297) focuses on applied program evaluation, supported by additional elective coursework.Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in criminal justice agencies, public policy organizations, nonprofit sectors, and research institutions, as well as for doctoral-level study in justice-related fields.
