COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Science in Informatics is a 30-unit graduate program designed to prepare students for careers in data management, information systems, cybersecurity, and domain-specific informatics applications such as health and privacy. The program emphasizes the transformation of data into actionable knowledge through user-centered design, secure information systems, and strong analytical practices. It combines technical foundations with applied skills in data analytics, human-centered design, security, and project management to address real-world information challenges across industries.The Foundation and Skills component consists of 18 units and builds the core competencies of the program. Students begin with INFM 200 (Informatics: Fundamentals, GWAR), which introduces key concepts and academic writing skills. Additional courses include INFM 201 (Technology Foundations), INFM 202 (Security Overview), INFM 203 (Big Data Analytics and Management), INFM 204 (Human-Centered Design), INFM 205 (Project Management), INFM 206 (Electronic Records: Foundations), INFM 207 (Digital Asset Management), and INFM 208 (Information Security: Information Assurance). Together, these courses provide a strong interdisciplinary foundation in computing, security, design thinking, data management, and organizational systems.Students then select a 9-unit specialization in either Health Informatics or Cybersecurity and Privacy. The Health track includes INFM 210 (Health Informatics), INFM 213 (Epidemiological Methods), and INFM 214 (Health Data and Analytics), focusing on healthcare systems, data analysis, and public health applications. The Cybersecurity and Privacy track includes INFM 215 (Network Security), INFM 216 (Computer Digital Forensics), and INFM 217 (Tools Lab), which prepare students for roles in digital security, forensic analysis, and information protection.The program concludes with a 3-unit culminating experience, INFM 211 (Informatics Culminating Project), where students apply their knowledge to a comprehensive real-world project.Overall, the MS in Informatics equips graduates with interdisciplinary skills that integrate technology, data analysis, security, and user-centered design, preparing them for careers in healthcare informatics, cybersecurity, data management, and information systems across diverse industries.
