COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering is a 30-unit graduate program designed to develop advanced skills in optimizing complex systems across manufacturing, service, logistics, and healthcare environments. The program focuses on improving efficiency, productivity, safety, quality, and system design by integrating engineering methods with management and analytical tools. It prepares students to bridge technical operations and organizational decision-making through a strong foundation in systems engineering, operations research, quality assurance, and human-centered design.A key component of the program is the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR), which is fulfilled through courses such as ISE 202 (Design and Analysis of Engineering Experiments), ISE 212 (Human Factors Experiments), or ISE 251 (Managing the Lean Enterprise Improvement Program). These courses strengthen students’ ability to conduct research, analyze data, and communicate technical findings effectively. Additional core coursework includes ISE 230 (Advanced Operations Research), ISE 235 (Quality Assurance and Reliability), and ISE 240 (Analytics for Systems Engineering), which together build a strong analytical and decision-making foundation.Students then select 12 units of specialization coursework in one of four areas: production and quality assurance, human factors engineering, supply chain and logistics engineering, or healthcare and service systems engineering. This allows students to tailor their studies to specific career goals and industry needs. In addition, 3 units of approved electives provide further flexibility, with restrictions on certain courses that cannot be used toward the degree.The program culminates in a 3-unit experience, which can be completed through one of three options: Plan A (Thesis), Plan B (Project), or a Comprehensive Exam. The thesis and project options involve independent research or applied work, while the exam option tests knowledge across core and elective areas.Overall, the MS in Industrial and Systems Engineering prepares graduates for advanced roles in industry or further doctoral study by combining technical expertise, analytical skills, and systems thinking to improve complex organizational processes.
