COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Geosciences is a 30-unit graduate program designed to provide advanced training in earth sciences, with a strong focus on research, technical expertise, and specialization in key areas of geology. The program prepares students for professional careers in fields such as environmental consulting, hydrogeology, geotechnical engineering, volcanology, tectonics, and sedimentary geology, while also building a strong foundation for independent scientific research through a thesis-based curriculum.The core requirement consists of 14 units, beginning with GEOL 285 (Seminar, 2 units), which provides advanced discussion and integration of geoscience topics. Students then complete 12 units of advanced geology coursework chosen from a list of specialized subjects, including igneous and metamorphic petrology, volcanology, sedimentary geology, structural geology and tectonics, geomorphology, hydrogeology, paleontology, and advanced geology. Many of these courses include a GWAR component, emphasizing scientific writing and research communication at a graduate level.In addition to the core, students complete 12 units of electives selected with advisor approval. These electives may include additional 100- or 200-level geology or related courses, allowing students to further tailor their academic focus. GEOL 285 may also be taken a second time to deepen seminar-based learning.The culminating experience is based on Plan A (Thesis) and totals 4 units. Students participate in GEOL 297 (Graduate Research in Geology), typically taken across multiple semesters to support ongoing research development, along with GEOL 299 (Master’s Thesis). This includes conducting original research and completing an oral thesis defense, demonstrating mastery of their chosen specialization.Overall, the program provides rigorous training in geoscience theory, field methods, and research skills, preparing graduates for advanced scientific roles and further academic study.
