COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Geographic Information Science (MS GISc) is a 30-unit, one-year graduate program designed to develop advanced skills in spatial data analysis, geographic information systems, and geospatial problem-solving. The program is structured across fall and spring semesters, followed by a culminating experience, and it prepares students for careers in a rapidly growing, technology-driven geospatial industry.In the fall semester, students complete 15 units of foundational and analytical coursework. This includes GISC 205 (Spatial Data Literacy and Ethics, GWAR), which emphasizes responsible and ethical use of geospatial data, GISC 210 (Spatial Data Science Through Open-Source GIS Technologies), and GISC 220 (Spatial Statistics, Analysis, & Modeling), which builds strong quantitative and modeling skills for spatial decision-making. Students also begin their capstone work with GISC 298A (Master Report 1: Final Project Research Design), where they develop the research design for their final project.In the spring semester, students complete another 15 units focused on advanced applications and technical specialization. Courses include GISC 230 (Web GIS/Geo Visualization), which focuses on interactive mapping and data visualization, GISC 279 (Python Programming for Advanced GIS), which develops programming skills for geospatial analysis, and GISC 282 (Advanced Remote Sensing & Image Processing), which covers satellite imagery and advanced spatial data interpretation.The program culminates in a 3-unit final project experience through GISC 298B (Master Report 2 – Final Project Development), where students complete and present a comprehensive applied geospatial project under faculty guidance.Overall, the MS GISc program combines theory, programming, spatial statistics, and remote sensing to equip students with strong technical, analytical, and communication skills. Graduates are prepared for professional roles in GIS analysis, environmental planning, urban development, transportation systems, and data science, where spatial intelligence is essential for informed decision-making.
