COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Environmental Studies is a 30-unit graduate program that combines scientific training, environmental theory, and applied research to prepare students for professional careers and advanced academic study. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, integrating environmental science with policy, philosophy, and field-based applications.The program begins with 9 units of core seminars. These include ENVS 200 (Seminar: Environmental Methods), which focuses on research techniques used in environmental studies; ENVS 250 (Seminar: Environmental Thought and Philosophy), which explores key ideas and frameworks in environmental theory; and ENVS 297 (Research and Proposal Development, GWAR), which trains students in designing research projects and writing formal proposals.Students then complete 9 units in Application Science, selected with advisor approval. These courses typically involve fieldwork, laboratory analysis, or other applied scientific training that helps students gain hands-on experience in environmental investigation and problem-solving.In addition, students take 6 units of electives from environmental studies or related fields. These courses must be chosen in consultation with an advisor and may include upper-division or graduate-level coursework, with a limit on how many undergraduate-level units can count toward the degree. This flexibility allows students to tailor the program to their specific interests, such as ecology, policy, or sustainability.The final 6 units are dedicated to the culminating experience, which may be completed through either Plan A or Plan B. Plan A involves ENVS 299 (Master’s Thesis, 6 units), where students conduct original research. Plan B consists of ENVS 298 (Special Study, 3 units) along with an additional 3 units of advisor-approved electives, focusing on a substantial applied project.Overall, the program develops strong analytical, scientific, and research skills, preparing graduates to address complex environmental challenges through evidence-based solutions, field experience, and interdisciplinary understanding.
