COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Engineering program is a 30-unit interdisciplinary graduate degree designed to build advanced analytical, systems, and problem-solving skills for professional engineers working in complex technical environments. The program provides a balanced combination of core engineering theory, specialized study, and hands-on culminating experience, allowing students to tailor their education based on career goals and technical interests.The core requirement consists of 6 units. Students take ENGR 201 (Engineering Analysis), which develops advanced mathematical and computational methods used in engineering problem-solving. They also complete ENGR 202 (Systems Engineering, GWAR), which focuses on designing, analyzing, and managing complex systems while also strengthening technical writing skills required for graduate-level research and professional communication.In addition to the core, students complete a specialized core ranging from 3 to 9 units. This component allows students to deepen knowledge in a selected engineering focus area, depending on their academic and professional objectives. Alongside this, students must complete 9 to 15 units of approved specialization electives, which provide flexibility to explore interdisciplinary topics across engineering fields.The program also includes a culminating experience worth 3 to 6 units, designed to demonstrate mastery of advanced engineering concepts through independent work. Students may choose between Plan A (Thesis) or Plan B (Project). Plan A involves ENGR 281 (Master’s Project/Thesis Preparation Seminar) followed by ENGR 299 (Master’s Thesis). Plan B offers two options: either ENGR 281 plus ENGR 298 (Master’s Project), or a two-course sequence of ENGR 295A and ENGR 295B, which together form a structured project experience.Overall, the MS Engineering program is designed to be flexible and interdisciplinary, enabling students to build customized expertise across multiple engineering domains while developing strong analytical, systems thinking, and project management skills essential for modern engineering careers.
