COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Computer Engineering (MS-CMPE) is a 33-unit graduate program designed to provide advanced knowledge and specialization in modern computing systems that integrate hardware and software. The program builds on core foundations in computer architecture, system software, and advanced computer design, preparing students to work on complex engineering problems across embedded systems, networking, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and machine learning applications.The core curriculum includes 12 units of essential courses in computer architecture, system software, and advanced computer design, which develop a strong understanding of how computing systems are structured and optimized. In addition, students must complete a Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) course, typically through a computer engineering seminar or engineering writing course, to strengthen technical communication and research skills.Students then choose a specialization area worth 6 units, selecting two courses within a focused track. Specializations include system software architecture, network systems, embedded systems, cybersecurity, and machine learning engineering. Each track allows students to develop deep expertise in a high-demand technical field, such as GPU programming, network security, embedded hardware and wireless systems, AI and deep learning, or cloud and virtualization technologies.The program also includes 9 units of approved electives, giving students flexibility to broaden or deepen their expertise in related areas of computer engineering or other advanced technical fields, subject to advisor approval.The degree concludes with a 6-unit culminating experience, which can be completed as either a thesis (Plan A) or a project (Plan B). This involves independent research or applied engineering work under faculty supervision, typically focusing on real-world systems or emerging technologies.Overall, the MS-CMPE program prepares graduates for advanced roles in industry such as embedded systems engineering, software and hardware development, network engineering, cybersecurity, AI systems, and research, while also supporting pathways into doctoral studies.
