COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Civil Engineering program requires the completion of 30 units and is designed to provide both depth and breadth in a chosen area of specialization. Students complete 15 to 18 units of core coursework consisting of 100-level or 200-level Civil Engineering courses within their primary specialization, such as structural, environmental, geotechnical, transportation, construction management, or water resources engineering. These courses build advanced technical knowledge and analytical skills specific to the selected field.In addition to the core requirements, students must complete 6 to 9 units of electives, chosen with the approval of a graduate advisor. These electives allow students to broaden their expertise or gain interdisciplinary knowledge relevant to their professional goals. Elective selection is flexible, enabling students to tailor their academic experience according to career interests or industry demands.A significant component of the program is the culminating experience, which accounts for 6 to 12 units. Students must choose one of three options: Plan A (Thesis), Plan B (Project), or Plan B (Comprehensive Exam). The thesis option involves conducting original research under faculty supervision, including CE 298 (Special Problems) and CE 299 (Master’s Thesis), and is ideal for students interested in research or doctoral studies. The project option requires students to complete 6 to 9 units in a secondary area of specialization along with a project (CE 298), focusing on practical, application-based work. The comprehensive exam option also includes coursework in a secondary specialization and requires students to pass a final examination administered by the department.Overall, the program offers flexibility in specialization, electives, and culminating options, preparing graduates for advanced professional practice, licensure, or further academic study.
