COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Chemical Engineering is a 30-unit graduate program designed to provide advanced knowledge in core chemical engineering principles along with flexibility for specialization and research. The program begins with 12 units of core courses that build a strong theoretical foundation. These include Research Methods (which fulfills the GWAR requirement), Advanced Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, Reaction Kinetics (also fulfilling GWAR), and Transport Processes. Together, these courses develop essential skills in analysis, modeling, and understanding of chemical processes.Students then complete 12 units of approved electives, selected in consultation with a graduate advisor. These electives allow students to tailor their studies toward specific interests such as energy systems, materials, environmental engineering, or computational methods. At least one elective must be a 200-level technical course, ensuring advanced academic rigor. Students engaged in on-campus research may also take CHE 282, which can be counted toward elective credits, providing additional hands-on research experience.The program concludes with a 6-unit culminating experience that integrates coursework and research. This includes a thesis or project preparation seminar, followed by graduate research or internship experience, and a final project or thesis course. Students can choose between research-focused or internship-based options, depending on their career goals. Overall, the program combines strong theoretical foundations, flexible electives, and practical research experience, preparing graduates for careers in industry, research, or further doctoral studies in chemical engineering and related fields.
