COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering is a 30-unit graduate program designed to provide students with advanced knowledge and practical skills in applying engineering principles to healthcare and medical technologies. The program begins with 18 units of core coursework that establish a strong foundation in key areas such as experimental methods, mathematical modeling, biomedical device design, regulatory and clinical aspects of medical devices, project management, and thesis or project preparation. These courses ensure that students develop both technical expertise and an understanding of industry standards, while also fulfilling the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR).In addition to the core, students complete 6 to 9 units of biomedical engineering electives, allowing them to specialize in areas aligned with their interests and career goals. Elective options include topics such as biofluid mechanics, microscale biomedical systems, nanotechnology applications, medical imaging, tissue engineering, and graduate research studies. This flexibility enables students to explore emerging technologies and deepen their expertise in specific subfields of biomedical engineering.The program concludes with a culminating experience of 3 to 6 units, where students choose between a thesis (Plan A) or a project (Plan B). The thesis option includes both a project and a formal research thesis, while the project option focuses on practical application and implementation of engineering solutions. Overall, the program integrates theoretical learning, technical specialization, and hands-on experience, preparing graduates for careers in the biomedical industry, healthcare technology, and research, as well as for further academic study.
