COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s in Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in Biomedical Devices is a 30-unit graduate program designed to provide advanced knowledge in the design, development, and regulation of medical devices. The program includes 18 units of core courses that build a strong foundation in biomedical engineering principles. These courses cover experimental methods, mathematical modeling, device design, regulatory and clinical aspects of medical devices (which fulfills the GWAR requirement), project management, and thesis or project preparation. Together, they equip students with both technical expertise and an understanding of industry standards and processes.Students must also complete 6 units of concentration courses focused specifically on biomedical devices. These include Medical and Biological Polymers and Microscale Biomedical Systems, which provide insights into materials used in medical devices and the physics behind small-scale biomedical technologies. These courses help students understand how devices interact with biological systems and how they are designed for medical applications.The program allows flexibility with 0 to 3 units of electives, enabling students to explore additional topics such as biofluid mechanics, nanotechnology applications, medical imaging, tissue engineering, or graduate research. This flexibility allows students to tailor their studies based on specific interests or career goals within the biomedical field.The program concludes with a culminating experience of 3 to 6 units, where students choose between a thesis (Plan A) or a project (Plan B). The thesis option involves both a project and a formal thesis, while the project option focuses on applied work. Overall, the 30-unit structure integrates engineering fundamentals, specialized knowledge, and practical experience, preparing graduates for careers in the biomedical device industry, healthcare technology, and research.
