COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s in Biological Sciences with a concentration in Ecology and Evolution is a 30-unit graduate program designed to provide advanced training in ecological and evolutionary research. The program begins with 15 units of core coursework that build a strong foundation in scientific communication, research methods, and graduate-level study. These include BIOL 201 Graduate Seminar, BIOL 202 Graduate Studies in Biology (which fulfills the GWAR requirement), BIOL 220 Science Communication, and BIOL 297 Graduate Research, where students complete a total of 8 units through hands-on research experience. This structure ensures students develop both theoretical understanding and practical research skills.Students then complete 9 units of concentration courses focused specifically on ecology and evolution. These include Advanced Evolution, Advanced Experimental Design and Analysis, and Advanced Topics in Ecology and Evolution. These courses deepen students’ knowledge of evolutionary theory, ecological processes, and scientific analysis, preparing them to investigate complex biological and environmental questions.In addition, students complete 5 units of electives chosen in consultation with a graduate advisor. Elective options include advanced topics in ecology, laboratory work, physiology, and other specialized biology areas, allowing students to tailor their studies to specific interests or research goals. The program concludes with a 1-unit culminating experience, where students choose between a thesis (Plan A) or a project (Plan B). Both options require a formal defense presentation, demonstrating the student’s ability to conduct independent research or applied work. Overall, the program provides a balanced combination of coursework, research experience, and specialization, preparing graduates for careers in research, environmental science, or further academic study.
