COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Applied Mathematics is a 33-unit graduate program designed to provide advanced training in mathematical theory, computation, and applications. The program begins with 15 units of core courses that build a strong foundation in applied and computational mathematics. These include Communication in the Mathematical Sciences, which also fulfills the GWAR requirement, Applied Mathematics I, Advanced Dynamical Systems, Numerical Solution of Partial Differential Equations, and Numerical Linear Algebra. Together, these courses develop essential skills in mathematical modeling, analysis, and computational methods used in research and industry.Students then complete 6 units of electives by selecting two courses from a wide range of advanced topics. Options include areas such as matrix theory, complex variables, mathematical data visualization, machine learning classification, cluster analysis, regression methods, stochastic processes, graph theory, and advanced applied mathematics topics. These electives allow students to tailor their studies toward specific interests such as data science, scientific computing, or theoretical applications. In addition, students must complete 9 units of additional electives chosen in consultation with a graduate advisor, with certain lower-level courses excluded to ensure advanced academic rigor.The program concludes with a 3-unit culminating experience, which can be completed through one of three options: a thesis (Plan A), a special study project (Plan B), or a comprehensive exam option. The thesis and project options require oral presentation and defense, while the exam option includes an additional elective and a final examination. Overall, students must complete 33 units and may apply up to 6 upper-division undergraduate units toward the degree. To graduate, students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in both the program and university requirements. This structure ensures graduates develop strong analytical, computational, and problem-solving skills applicable to research, industry, and further academic study.
