COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering (MSAE) is a 30-unit graduate program structured to provide advanced technical training and specialization in aerospace systems. The program begins with a 3-unit advanced mathematics course, AE 200 Engineering Analysis of Aerospace Systems, which strengthens analytical and problem-solving skills needed for graduate-level engineering work. Students then complete 12 units of core coursework, selecting at least one course from each of four major areas: propulsion, dynamics and control, structures and materials, and fluid dynamics. These courses include subjects such as space propulsion systems, orbital mechanics, spacecraft dynamics, trajectory optimization, advanced structures, aerodynamics, gas dynamics, boundary layers, hypersonics, and computational fluid dynamics. This structure ensures that students gain a strong and balanced foundation across key aerospace engineering domains. In addition to core requirements, students complete 9 units in an area of specialization or approved electives. They may choose between Aircraft Design or Space Transportation and Exploration, or design a customized elective plan with approval from the graduate coordinator. Specialization options allow deeper study in areas such as aircraft stability, space systems engineering, propulsion, and advanced aerodynamics. Some courses also fulfill the GWAR requirement, supporting graduate-level writing and communication skills. This flexible structure enables students to align their studies with specific career goals in industry or research. The program also includes a 6-unit culminating experience, which can be completed either as a thesis or a project. Plan A involves conducting original research through the Aerospace Engineering Master’s Thesis, while Plan B involves a two-part Master’s Project focused on applied engineering problems. Overall, students must complete 30 units and may apply up to 15 upper-division undergraduate units toward the degree. Electives can also be selected from related fields such as engineering, science, or business. To graduate, students must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, ensuring strong academic performance throughout the program.
