COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program at San José State University is a 43-unit graduate degree designed to prepare students for professional roles in libraries, archives, and the broader information science field. The program equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to manage, organize, retrieve, and preserve information in both physical and digital environments. It emphasizes the role of information professionals in supporting diverse user communities through effective access to information, technology integration, and user-centered services.The core curriculum consists of 13 units, including foundational courses such as INFO 200 (Information Communities, GWAR), INFO 202 (Information Retrieval System Design), INFO 203 (Online Learning: Tools and Strategies), and INFO 204 (Information Professions). These courses provide a strong theoretical and practical foundation in information systems, user communities, and professional practice. Students also complete INFO 285 (Applied Research Methods), which develops essential research and analytical skills for evidence-based decision-making in information environments. Certain core courses require a minimum grade of B or better to ensure competency in key areas.Students then complete 27 units of electives, allowing for specialization in areas such as academic librarianship, public libraries, school library media, archives and records management, information technology, data management, and user experience. Elective options include courses like reference services, database design, intellectual freedom, cataloging and classification, web usability, digital preservation, and youth services. This flexible structure allows students to tailor their studies to specific career goals within the information profession.The program concludes with a 3-unit culminating experience, which may be completed through either Plan A (Thesis) using INFO 299 or Plan B (Portfolio) using INFO 289. This final requirement allows students to demonstrate their mastery of library and information science through either research or professional practice.Overall, the MLIS program prepares graduates for careers in academic, public, school, and special libraries, as well as roles in archives, digital information systems, and emerging areas of information management and technology.
