COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing at San José State University is a 44-unit graduate program designed to develop advanced skills in creative writing, literary analysis, and professional literary practice. It prepares students for careers as professional writers, editors, publishers, and educators, while also providing strong preparation for doctoral study in English and related fields. The program combines intensive writing practice with literary theory, research, and professional development to ensure students gain both creative mastery and critical understanding of literature.The curriculum is structured around four major areas: core study, writing workshops, literary research, and professional development, along with a culminating experience. The core requirement includes a practicum course that supports students in refining their writing practice and developing a consistent creative process. A significant portion of the degree is dedicated to workshops in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, where students specialize in a primary genre and also study a secondary genre. These workshops emphasize peer critique, revision, and the development of a strong body of original creative work.In addition to creative training, students complete literary research courses that explore a wide range of topics such as narrative and poetic theory, American and British literature, genre studies, Shakespeare, medieval and modern literature, and comparative literary approaches. These courses strengthen students’ analytical and scholarly abilities and enhance their understanding of literary traditions and critical frameworks. The program also includes professional development courses that provide practical experience in publishing, editing, rhetoric, and composition studies, including opportunities to work on literary publications such as Reed Magazine.The degree culminates in either a thesis or departmental project, along with a comprehensive examination, demonstrating both creative and academic proficiency. Overall, the program integrates creative practice, literary scholarship, and professional training, preparing graduates for successful careers in writing, publishing, education, and related literary fields.
