COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Archives and Records Administration (MARA) is a 42-unit fully online graduate program designed to prepare students for advanced roles in archives, records management, and information governance. The program begins with 27 units of core coursework that establish a strong foundation in recordkeeping theory, archival practices, and information management systems. Core courses include topics such as records creation, appraisal, retention, access, storage, digital preservation, enterprise content management, research methods, information assurance, and the development of information governance strategies. One of the core courses also fulfills the GWAR requirement, ensuring students develop strong professional writing and communication skills.In addition to the core curriculum, students complete 12 units of electives selected from a wide range of information science and archival studies courses. These electives allow students to tailor their education based on career interests and may include subjects such as information retrieval systems, database design, cataloging and classification, web usability, preservation management, archives and manuscripts, and seminars on contemporary issues in information science and records management. Students may also take professional experience or special studies courses, providing opportunities for practical learning and applied research.The program concludes with a 3-unit culminating experience through MARA 289, which focuses on advanced topics in archives and records administration and includes an ePortfolio requirement. This capstone allows students to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and professional readiness. Overall, students must complete 42 units to graduate. The fully online structure of the program enables flexibility for students to study from anywhere while engaging with interactive learning technologies. To graduate, students must meet a minimum GPA requirement of 3.0, ensuring strong academic performance throughout the program.
