COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Spanish requires a total of 32 units and is designed to provide advanced knowledge in Spanish language, linguistics, literature, and culture. The program includes 20 units of required coursework, beginning with Graduate Research and Writing (which fulfills the GWAR requirement), followed by 16 units selected from advanced courses such as Modern Spanish, Hispanic civilization and culture, historical linguistics, dialectology, and seminars in literature and culture. These courses allow students to develop strong analytical, linguistic, and cultural competencies. In addition, students complete 12 units of electives chosen in consultation with a graduate advisor, with options including advanced conversation, Spanish and Spanish American literature, translation, and specialized topics related to careers. The program culminates in a comprehensive written examination (Plan B), which assesses students’ mastery of the subject areas covered throughout the program. Overall, the curriculum provides a well-rounded and in-depth education, preparing graduates for doctoral study or careers in education, translation, international business, and other fields related to Spanish language and Hispanic cultures.
