COURSE CURRICULUM

The Multilingual and Multicultural Literacy Education (MMLE) master’s program requires a total of 30 units designed to prepare educators as literacy leaders who can support multilingual and culturally diverse PK–12 students through equity-focused and critical literacy practices. The core coursework consists of 20 units and includes classes such as Culturally Responsive Assessment for Instruction, Culturally and Linguistically Sustaining Literacy Instruction, Advanced Critical Literacy Instruction, Politics, Theory and Practice of Critical Literacy, Assessment and Instruction for Culturally Sustaining Literacy Leadership, and Critical Literacy Research Methods, which also fulfills the GWAR requirement. These courses collectively build strong foundations in culturally responsive pedagogy, critical literacy theory, assessment strategies, and research methods that support equitable education. The program also includes 4 units of practicum experience through supervised courses focused on culturally responsive assessment and culturally sustaining literacy instruction, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in real educational settings. The culminating experience accounts for 6 units and consists of advanced practicum-based coursework in Critical Literacy Leadership and Student Practicum, where students demonstrate their ability to lead, design, and implement literacy instruction in diverse classrooms. Overall, the program integrates theory, practice, and research to develop highly skilled educators capable of addressing linguistic diversity, promoting critical literacy, and advancing educational equity in PK–12 learning environments.
