COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in English is a 30-unit graduate program focused on advanced study of literature, literary research, and academic writing. It is designed to develop students’ ability to critically analyze texts, engage with theoretical frameworks, and conduct scholarly research at a high level.The program begins with a 4-unit core course, ENGL 201 (Materials and Methods of Literary Research, GWAR), which trains students in advanced research techniques, scholarly writing, and methods used in literary studies. This course provides the foundation for graduate-level analysis and academic work in English studies.Students then complete 20 units of electives, consisting of five graduate-level courses selected in consultation with an MA advisor. These electives allow students to explore specialized areas of literature, theory, rhetoric, writing studies, or other approved topics within the field. This flexible structure enables students to shape the program according to their academic interests and career goals.The final 6 units are dedicated to the culminating experience, which can be completed through one of two options. Plan A includes ENGL 299 (University Thesis, 6 units) along with a comprehensive exam, allowing students to conduct in-depth research and produce a formal scholarly thesis. Plan B consists of ENGL 297 (MA Comprehensive Exam Preparation, 2 units), a comprehensive exam, and one additional graduate-level elective course. Both options assess students’ mastery of literary knowledge, critical theory, and research skills.Overall, the MA in English prepares students for advanced academic work, teaching, and professional writing careers. It also serves as a strong foundation for those who wish to pursue doctoral studies in English or related disciplines.
