COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Economics program at SJSU provides advanced training in economic theory, quantitative methods, and applied research, preparing students for professional roles in economics, policy analysis, and related fields. The curriculum is structured around core courses in microeconomic and macroeconomic analysis, mathematical methods, and research design, with a strong emphasis on analytical rigor and empirical methods, including econometrics and economic research writing that satisfies the GWAR requirement. Students further develop specialization through concentration courses such as econometric methods, forecasting, public finance, labor economics, monetary policy, and law and economics, allowing them to tailor their studies toward applied or theoretical interests. The program also requires elective coursework to broaden academic exposure and deepen expertise in selected areas of economics. For graduation, students must complete a culminating experience, either through a comprehensive exam or a master’s project, demonstrating their ability to apply economic reasoning and research methods to real-world or theoretical problems. Overall, the program is designed to produce graduates with strong quantitative skills, critical thinking ability, and advanced understanding of economic systems and policy analysis.
