COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Communication Studies is a 32-unit graduate program designed to provide advanced knowledge of communication theory, research methods, and practical application across diverse real-world contexts. The program is offered in both hybrid and fully online formats, allowing flexibility for students. It begins with three core courses (12 units): Graduate Study in Communication, Methods and Methodologies of Communication Studies, and an Advanced Writing Workshop that satisfies the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR). These foundational courses develop strong analytical, research, and academic writing skills.Students then complete 12 units of seminars distributed across three key areas: theoretical foundations, research inquiry, and applied practice. In the theory component, students explore areas such as interpersonal communication, organizational communication, rhetoric, intercultural communication, and critical theory. The research inquiry section focuses on methodologies like communication criticism, narrative analysis, and specialized research topics. The applied practice component emphasizes real-world engagement through teaching, communication pedagogy, and practical communication strategies.In addition to seminars, students complete 4 units of advanced specialization or electives. These may include independent study, internships, study abroad, or interdisciplinary coursework from other programs, allowing students to tailor the degree to their career goals.The program concludes with a 4-unit culminating experience, where students choose one of three options: a thesis (Plan A), a project (Plan B), or a comprehensive exam (Plan C). This final component demonstrates the student’s ability to integrate theory, research, and application. Overall, the program prepares graduates for doctoral study, teaching positions, and professional careers in fields such as media, organizational communication, education, and public relations.
