COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Chemistry program requires the completion of 30 units and is designed to enhance advanced knowledge in chemistry for careers in teaching, industry, or scientific communication. The curriculum includes core courses totaling 21 units, which provide a strong academic and research foundation. A key component is CHEM 100W (Chemical Communications), fulfilling the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR), although students who have already completed this course at the undergraduate level must replace it with additional electives. Students must also complete CHEM 120S (Chemical Safety Seminar), CHEM 285 (Seminar, taken twice), and CHEM 297 (Graduate Research), which includes a preliminary seminar presentation. Additionally, 12 units must be selected from 200-level chemistry courses to build advanced subject knowledge.The program also includes 7 units of electives, allowing students to tailor their studies based on career goals. These electives can be selected from approved 100- or 200-level chemistry courses with advisor consent, and at least one must be an advanced laboratory course. Options include areas such as biochemistry, nuclear science, computational chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and instrumental analysis.For the culminating experience (2 units), students must choose between Plan A (Master’s Thesis) or Plan B (Master’s Research Report). Both options require a department seminar presentation and an oral examination. The thesis option involves conducting original research, while the research report option focuses on applied or analytical work.Overall, the program emphasizes a balance of coursework, research, and practical laboratory experience, preparing graduates for teaching roles, industry positions, or further academic pursuits. Students must maintain academic standards and successfully complete all requirements to graduate.
