COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Art History and Visual Culture is a 30-unit graduate program designed to provide advanced training in art history, critical theory, and visual culture, with two distinct tracks: Research in Art History and Visual Culture, and Art Criticism and Applied Practice. The program begins with 9 units of core coursework that establish a strong foundation in art historical theory, historiography, and critical analysis. These include Theories of Art History and Art Criticism, a GWAR-designated seminar in Twentieth Century Art, and a seminar in Historiography, all of which help students develop advanced analytical and writing skills in the discipline.Students then specialize through one of two academic tracks, each requiring 18 additional units. In the Research track, students complete upper-division elective courses and additional graduate seminars in art history, with the option to take up to six units from other departments with advisor approval. This track is designed for students preparing for doctoral study or research-focused careers. In the Art Criticism and Applied Practice track, students take courses focused on curatorial practice, contemporary art theory, and exhibition development, including seminars in curatorial practices and contemporary art, along with additional electives in art history or studio art. This track emphasizes applied skills for careers in museums, galleries, and cultural institutions.The program concludes with a 3-unit culminating experience. Research track students complete comprehensive qualifying exams, a language exam, and a thesis under Plan A, while Applied Practice students complete a qualifying exam and a project under Plan B. Overall, the degree requires 30 units of coursework and assessment. The structure ensures that students develop strong theoretical knowledge, research skills, and professional competencies suited to academic, curatorial, and cultural careers in art history and visual culture.
