COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s in Anthropology is a 36-unit graduate program designed to provide advanced training in anthropological theory, research methods, and applied fields of study. The program begins with 18 units of core courses that build a strong academic foundation. These include Theory in Practice (which also fulfills the GWAR requirement), two Applications Core courses, Fields of Application, Advanced Research Methods, and Quantitative Methods, although the latter may be replaced with an advisor-approved elective. Together, these courses develop students’ understanding of anthropological frameworks while strengthening their analytical and research skills.In addition to the core requirements, students complete 6 units in an Anthropology Depth Requirement by taking two upper-division anthropology courses approved by their faculty advisor. Another 6 units are completed under the Field of Application Requirement, which allows students to take upper-division courses from across the university, also selected with advisor approval. This flexible structure enables students to tailor their studies to specific interests or career goals within anthropology and related disciplines.The program also includes a 6-unit culminating experience designed to demonstrate independent research ability. Students must complete ANTH 280 Individual Studies, along with either a thesis (Plan A) through ANTH 299 or a project (Plan B) through ANTH 298. Both options require substantial independent work and allow students to apply their learning to original research or applied projects. In total, students must complete 36 units, with elective coursework planned in consultation with a graduate advisor. Up to 15 units of upper-division undergraduate coursework may be applied toward the degree. To graduate, students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in both the program and overall university requirements, ensuring consistent academic performance throughout their studies.
