COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering program requires a total of 120 units to graduate, including lower division general education, upper division general education, major preparation, and major requirements. Core lower division general education consists of 12 units, with several additional units satisfied through major coursework in areas such as mathematics, science, and writing. American Institutions requirements totaling 6 units can also be fulfilled through approved general education courses. Upper division general education is not separately required, as all 9 units are integrated into major coursework. Physical education requirements are waived, and the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement is fulfilled through ENGR 100W, which accounts for 3 units.The major preparation component consists of 33 units and includes foundational courses in mathematics, physics, English composition, and science. Students must complete key courses such as Calculus I, Calculus II, Calculus III, Discrete Mathematics, and General Physics I and II. Some of these foundational courses, especially MATH 30, MATH 31, and PHYS 50, must be completed with a grade of C or better, while others require a minimum grade of C-. Students also choose one course from either differential equations and linear algebra or combinatorics, and one course from probability and statistics options, ensuring both mathematical depth and analytical skill development.The major requirements total 66 units and include core computing, software engineering, and engineering courses. Early core courses introduce programming and engineering fundamentals through CS 46A, CS 46B, and ENGR 10. Advanced coursework covers topics such as computer architecture, software engineering design and processes, computer networks, operating systems, databases, cybersecurity, human-computer interaction, and software quality engineering. Students must also complete senior design projects and global engineering coursework through CMPE 195A, CMPE 195B, ENGR 195A, and ENGR 195B, which emphasize real-world problem solving, teamwork, and societal impact. Additionally, students must complete approved upper division electives totaling 6 units in consultation with an advisor. Overall, the program is structured to provide strong theoretical foundations, applied engineering skills, and practical experience needed for professional software engineering careers.
