COURSE CURRICULUM

The Radio-Television-Film (RTVF) Bachelor of Arts program at San José State University is a 120-unit degree designed to prepare students for careers in media production, film, television, radio, and digital storytelling. The program combines general education, humanities requirements, major preparation, and extensive hands-on production coursework to develop both creative and technical skills. Students begin with foundational courses such as The Art of Film, Media and Culture, and Writing Workshop, which introduce film analysis, media theory, and professional writing for the industry. The core of the major includes training in audio production, film and television production, screenwriting, media aesthetics, film history, and critical studies, ensuring students gain a strong understanding of both the artistic and analytical aspects of media. Intermediate and advanced production courses build practical skills in areas such as audio engineering, cinematography, editing, screenwriting, and production management, while internship and portfolio development courses help prepare students for professional careers. The program also offers a wide range of electives that allow students to specialize in areas such as podcasting, radio broadcasting, digital media analysis, advanced filmmaking techniques, post-production, and television production, including opportunities to work with campus media platforms like KSJS. Additional coursework in global screen cultures and media studies further expands students’ understanding of international and cultural dimensions of film and television. University electives provide flexibility for academic exploration outside the major. Overall, the RTVF program blends theory, critique, and hands-on production experience to prepare graduates for careers in the entertainment and media industries, including film production, broadcasting, content creation, editing, screenwriting, and digital media, as well as for graduate study in media and communication fields.
