COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Physics at San José State University is a 120-unit program designed to provide students with a strong foundation in physics, mathematics, and computational methods while preparing them for advanced study or careers in applied and theoretical physics, engineering-related fields, and data-driven scientific work. The program includes 18 units of Core Lower Division General Education, with up to 10 units potentially satisfied through major coursework in areas such as physical science, mathematics, and quantitative reasoning, along with 6 units of American Institutions requirements. Students also complete 9 units of Upper Division General Education, 2 units of Physical Education, and a 3-unit Written Communication requirement (GWAR/WID).Major preparation consists of 37 units and establishes the mathematical and scientific foundation required for upper-division physics study. This includes general chemistry (CHEM 1A), a full calculus sequence (MATH 30, 31, and 32), differential equations (MATH 33A), linear algebra (MATH 39), and introductory physics coursework covering mechanics, electricity and magnetism, and waves, light, and heat (PHYS 50, 51, and 52). Students also complete introductory physics and computational coursework such as PHYS 20 and PHYS 40, which support early development of analytical and programming skills used in physics applications. The major requirements total 42 units and provide advanced training in core physics and astronomy topics. Students complete upper-division courses in advanced mechanics, electromagnetism (including a second sequence), electronics and experimental methods, modern physics, mathematical and computational physics, thermodynamics, statistical physics, and quantum mechanics. They also select from laboratory or applied physics courses such as advanced measurements or optics, and complete additional units through individual studies, directed reading, or seminars. A further 6 units of upper-division electives in physics or astronomy allow specialization in areas such as astrophysics, quantum information, nuclear science, optics, or solid-state physics. Finally, students complete 3 units of university electives, bringing the total to 120 units. Overall, the program provides a rigorous and flexible education that integrates theory, computation, and experimental physics, preparing graduates for graduate school or technical careers in physics and related scientific fields.
