COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering is a comprehensive, ABET-accredited program that prepares students for professional engineering careers and advanced study in areas such as design, manufacturing, energy systems, robotics, and aerospace. The program is designed to develop strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills needed to address real-world engineering challenges, particularly within high-tech and interdisciplinary industries. Students complete a structured curriculum that integrates mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering science, design, laboratory work, and professional development. The program requires a total of 125 units, including general education, major preparation, major coursework, and technical electives.Major preparation builds a strong foundation in calculus, differential equations, chemistry, and physics, along with communication skills through technical writing and engineering analysis. Students also gain early exposure to engineering principles such as statics, materials, and introductory design. The core curriculum introduces fundamental engineering tools and concepts, including circuits, materials science, design graphics, machine shop safety, and computational applications.Upper-division coursework forms the main engineering focus and includes subjects such as mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, dynamics, vibration, control systems, and experimental methods. Students also study mechatronics, applied engineering analysis, and emerging topics such as artificial intelligence in mechanical engineering. Laboratory-based learning and hands-on experimentation are emphasized throughout the program.A key component of the degree is the senior design sequence, where students complete real engineering projects in ME 195A and ME 195B, often addressing industry-relevant problems. Students also choose a capstone design course in areas such as mechanical systems, thermal systems, or mechatronics systems.
