COURSE CURRICULUM

The Kinesiology BS program at San José State University requires a total of 120 units and offers a comprehensive blend of general education, scientific foundation courses, core kinesiology coursework, and specialized training aligned with career goals. Students complete 18 units of lower division general education (with many science and math requirements integrated into the major), 9 units of upper division GE, 2 units of physical education, and a writing requirement fulfilled through KIN 100W. The major preparation (19 units) builds a strong scientific base through courses in human anatomy, human physiology, introductory chemistry, and quantitative reasoning (with statistics recommended), ensuring students understand the biological and analytical aspects of human movement. The core kinesiology curriculum (26 units) introduces key concepts such as exercise physiology, biomechanics, measurement and evaluation, and sociocultural or historical perspectives of sport, along with motor development or motor learning and hands-on physical activity courses across multiple movement areas. The most significant portion of the program is the 40-unit area of specialization, allowing students to focus their studies based on career interests. Options include Exercise and Fitness Specialist, Inclusive Physical Activity in Communities (IPAC), Rehabilitation Science, Sport Management and Culture, and Individualized Studies. Each specialization includes targeted coursework, internships, and guided electives—for example, the Exercise and Fitness Specialist track emphasizes fitness assessment and clinical exercise, while Rehabilitation Science prepares students for graduate health programs like physical therapy or medical school through advanced science courses. IPAC focuses on working with diverse and special populations, and Sport Management and Culture integrates business, sociology, and sport studies. The Individualized Studies option allows for a customized academic pathway with advisor approval. Across all tracks, internships and practical experiences are emphasized to develop real-world skills.
